Homemade Christmas Dog Treat Recipe

Homemade Christmas Dog Treat Recipe

from Whistle

Between playing in the snow and singing dog-mas carols our pups are pooped. These treats will ensure you are on your dog's nice list. Let your pup pick out the treat shape so they don't miss out on cookie decorating.
  • 1 lb of Ground Turkey
  • 2 Carrots (Medium Sized)
  • 2 Sweet Potatoes (Medium Sized)
  • 1 cup of Rice Flour (Extra when rolling)
  • 1 cup of Quick Cooking Oats
  • 1 tsp of Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp of Ground GInger
  • 3 Tbsp of Honey
  • 2 Eggs (Beat before combining)
  • ⅓ cup of Dried Unsweetened Cranberries (Chopped)
  • 1 Tbsp of Parsley (Chopped)
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large skillet over medium, cook the ground turkey until it is browned and cooked all the way through. Drain the turkey to remove any access oil and place to the side.
  2. Trim the carrots and cut into thirds, place them into a bowl. Cover the carrots with water and microwave for about four minutes or until they are soft. Drain and set aside to cool before dicing into fine pieces.
  3. Prick the sweet potatoes with a fork before placing them in the microwave for four minutes or until they are soft enough to skin and mash. Combine with the honey and eggs until they are well mixed. Add the turkey, carrots, cranberries, and parsley, stir until well combined.
  4. Mix together the dry ingredients, rice flour, oats, cinnamon, and ginger, before adding the mixture to the bowl of the wet ingredients. Roll out the mixture on a rice flour covered surface (minimum of ¼ of an inch), before using any shape cookie cutter to cut out designs.
  5. Place the cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet and cook in the oven for 25 minutes or until the edges are a light golden brown. Allow to completely cool before handing them to your pup.

This take on a holiday tradition contains lean meats such as turkey that can provide an excellent source of protein and help reduce excess calories and fat. Use honey cautiously in pets that are known diabetics.
