Training Tools Revealed
I met with KONG’s Mark Hines at Clicker Expo in Rhode Island a couple months ago. I attended his KONG Toys presentation which was fantastic. Since attending the KONG seminar, I immediately began using all the different KONG toys in training, behavior management and daily activity / entertainment. I had been aware of the KONG toys durability and entertainment value, but did not realize I had some of the greatest training tools. The KONG Toy seminar opened my eyes to their full potential.
I am now stressing the use of KONG toys to all my students and clients. It was a real breakthrough for me as a trainer. I also wanted to tell you that the large red Goodie Bone is a great addition to your product line along as well as the Wet Wubba.

KONG COMMUNITY LETTERS
This month the KONG Company would like to share two letters. One sent to us by a grateful member of the KONG community and the second sent by a wonderful non-profit organization. It is great to be part of a community and product line that truly makes a positive difference in the lives of companion animals and their owners.
KONG Community Letter:
Dear KONG Team,
We got Molly, a beagle-Chow mix, when she was 8 weeks old, as a companion for our 2 year mix that had just lost her friend to a fire. Molly was your typical Beagle puppy...nose where it shouldn't be, and always in trouble trying to find new things.
I was about two steps away from calling in the pros, when someone suggested a treat-stuffed KONG toy. I thought what the hey. What can it hurt? So I went out and got a Puppy KONG with a few of the KONG Stuff’N treats to fill it with. I filled her first Puppy KONG full and gave it to her.
Two blessed hours of quiet while she focused intently on that treat-stuffed toy was my reward. It completely wore her out and she slept the sleep of a played-out puppy. From then on, whenever she started to get into trouble, we'd stuff her Puppy KONG and toss it to her. You could see how much she loved it.
Emptying the treat-stuffed KONG made her think and learn. The first time she threw it against the wall and the biscuits inside broke loose - it was a jack-pot moment. Even now, years later, when she's un-stuffing a KONG toy, she will hurl it against the floor or the wall. Once we realized the endless stuffing possibilities, we knew the KONG toy would keep her busy forever. It's now common to watch her fall asleep with the empty KONG by her side.
Needless to say, she outgrew her blue and white Puppy KONG, and graduated to the red KONG Classic model. She on occasion misplaces it or hides it in her crate, or under the couch, but eventually pulls it out and drops it in my lap. It's also great to keep her quiet when guests are over, and as a reward for trips to the groomer or the vet.
Molly's newly found good behavior has made me truly appreciate the value of a KONG. I won't raise another puppy without one! This thing has got to be the greatest dog invention since the collar!!
Thanks always,
Amanda and Molly
Non-Profit Letter:
Dear KONG Company,
I am the Chairman of the Board of directors for Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. If you go to our website www.aspenvalleywildlifesanctuary.com you will see that we have in our sanctuary at present, seven wolves that are not eligible for release back into the wild. Needless to say we are all very sorry for this situation but it is in the best interests and safety of the animals that they stay in our facility for the duration of their lives. We at the Sanctuary work very hard to make the animals' lives as rich and pleasant as possible.
The other day I was watching one of our wolves. A very sad story actually, with a happy ending however. This animal was taken from its former owner who had her chained to a fence where she was habitually beaten to try and make her become a "house pet". This dear animal will only approach the enclosure fence in total submissive behavior, virtually on her belly, ears back, panting and urinating in complete submission.
I watched and talked to her for quite a while and it occurred to me how wonderful it would be if we could enrich her existence with something that would give her a challenge and reward her efforts. A treat-stuffed KONG Toy was the answer! This led me to watch the other wolves and while they are much "wilder" they too will approach given patience and diligence. They too benefit from the extra enrichment and reward.
Personally, I am a huge fan of the KONG toy. I have used the KONG with my own dogs for years and at present have two Golden Retrievers. Both receive a stuffed KONG (with peanut butter or cheese) every night for their bedtime treat. They are also given their stuffed KONGS with little bits of a large hard cookie to work on while we are away from the house. They LOVE their KONGs. People that have seen me do this with our own dogs have adopted this play/reward/comforting practice with their own dogs and have been delighted with the results.
On behalf of our beloved wolves and the others at AVWS, I thank you for all you do.
Kindest regards,
Julia McLaren

Foster Volunteering
By Laura Bender
Q) What does it mean to “foster” an animal?
A) Foster “parents” work with established rescue organizations to temporarily take homeless animals (usually dogs or cats) into their home, caring for them as they would their own pet.
Q) How long is an animal fostered?
A) It depends. Usually the animal is kept until it can be adopted into it’s new “forever” home. Some organizations may have a need for short term, emergency foster homes until space opens up at a shelter or another foster home. In some cases, a foster home is needed until an animal recuperates from surgery or some other medical condition. And many organizations seek foster homes for puppies and kittens until they are old enough to be adopted (usually 8-14 weeks, depending on the shelter).
Q) What if I bring an animal home and it doesn’t work out
A) Before fostering, you should make sure that the organization is capable of taking the animal back if necessary. But potential foster parents should know that the initial days and weeks of fostering a new animal can be challenging. Transitioning to a new environment can be stressful to an animal, and even previously housebroken pets may have accidents at first, and in unfamiliar surroundings dogs may display inappropriate chewing or barking. It’s particularly stressful for a sheltered animal to be brought to a home only to be returned back to a shelter environment—so unless you are willing to work through these common “issues”, it may best to focus your volunteer efforts working with animals at the shelter itself.
Q) How is fostering beneficial?
A) By fostering an animal, often you are freeing up a shelter cage so that another animal’s life can be saved. Fostering can also prevent behavior problems from developing. Often a well-mannered, suddenly homeless but previously loved pet will become so confused or frightened in a shelter environment that they begin to exhibit new, detrimental behaviors. These previously very adoptable animals can become very difficult or impossible to place.
Less socialized animals benefit just as much, as they become more trusting of people and learn important social skills. In both cases, fostering often makes an animal more adoptable, and as a foster parent you can provide feedback on how the animal behaves in a home—decreasing the chance the animal will be returned.
Q) What are the requirements to be a foster home?
A) Requirements vary by organization, but above all they will be concerned with making sure you can provide a safe environment for the pet. Almost all organizations require you to fill out an application and many require a home inspection and/or training session prior to placing an animal.
Q) Can I foster if I have children?
A) While some organizations prohibit or limit the age of children in a foster home, others welcome children as long as the child can be trusted to treat the animal humanely. If you do have children, or anyone with special needs (such as an elderly family member), make sure the foster organization is aware of it so they can choose a suitable pet for your home.
Q) Can I foster if I already have dogs or cats?
A) Yes, as long as your pets get along with other animals. Make sure the foster organization knows that you have pets—many shelters that house both dogs and cats will “cat test” dogs before placing them in households with cats. Always be very cautious bringing a new dog into a house with cats, even if they’ve “passed a cat test” or lived with cats before. It’s not unusual for a dog that is “friends” with one cat to view a new cat as prey.
If you have a dog at home, it’s best to introduce your dog to the potential foster dog in a neutral area (outside the sheltering organization usually works fine) before you bring the dog home, to see how they get along. Unfortunately, most cats do not appreciate a similar trip, so cat introductions may be best done at home.
If you do have pets, before bringing a foster into your home make sure that it has had a preliminary medical screening and received the appropriate vaccinations. Ask your vet what they specifically recommend. If you bring a new animal into your home before it’s been medically screened, it’s prudent to keep the animal in a separate area of the house (and yard) until a screening examination can be done.
Q) Isn’t it hard to give animals back?
A) Absolutely. After spending time in your home with your family, it’s likely you’ll become very attached to your foster pet. In fact, sometimes foster homes become permanent homes as the foster family decides to adopt the pet forever. However, most foster pets eventually get placed in new forever homes. While it’s sad to see them go, you have satisfaction knowing that they are going into their new home better prepared because of your efforts. And if the house feels empty after they’re gone, you have the opportunity to help another animal along the path to a new home.
Q) How can I find an organization that needs foster homes?
A) Most animal rescue organizations have a foster program, or can refer you to someone that does. Petfinder has a comprehensive list of rescue organizations, including breed rescues that can be searched geographically at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters.html
Laura Bender is a KONG employee who has fostered over 100 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens for a variety of rescue organizations.
KONG TRAINING
Progressive Challenge Part 2 –
KONG Toy Specifics
In Volume 15 we explored the best way to introduce and effectively use enrichment toys. In that article, we offered broad instruction for the entire enrichment toy category (KONG and Non-KONG toys). In this issue’s article, we give toy-specific suggestions for the use of selected KONG Enrichment Toys.
With any enrichment/puzzle toy, we recommend the “always let your dog win” method of introduction. Creating success during the introductory stage is an important step toward ensuring repeated use and gaining maximum benefits from your KONG toys. Remember to challenge your dog progressively, start with the easiest challenges then slowly work toward harder challenges.
Once the basics are mastered (one to two weeks) it is important to keep the toy and activity interesting by varying the treat rewards and difficulty level (progressive challenge). Each new challenge level should engage your dog for longer periods of time especially at the beginning of a new challenge. As your dog masters each new challenge level you can increase the difficulty/engagement length or maintain the current level based on what you wish to achieve through enrichment (basic entertainment/reward, behavior modification - distraction/replacement, reduction of separation anxiety, crate training, etc).
As with any enrichment program in zoos or at home it’s important to utilize a variety of toys and treat-stuffing methods. Below are a few examples that utilize different treat dispensing or gripping designs, each toy will require your dog to explore and adapt unique methods of solving the individual treat dispensing puzzles. Depending on how and what you stuff the toy with will expand the usefulness of the educational/enrichment activities.
KONG Classic, Extreme, Senior and Puppy toys –
Our original KONG-shaped toys available in various models for dogs of all ages and chewing temperaments, is considered by many to be the first widely available enrichment/treat dispensing toy. The durability and treat dispensing variety of this toy make it a must for any enrichment toy collection.
Toy introduction: Begin by filling the hollow section of the KONG toy with treats easily dispensed. Try smaller kibble or treats that fall out easily. KONG Stuff’N Easy Treats or peanut butter applied near the large opening of the KONG toy also work great and will ensure your dog’s understanding and success.
Maintaining enrichment: After a week or two of easily un-stuffed KONG toys, gradually increase the challenge by using larger treats or combination of treats that are increasingly difficult to dislodge. Use your imagination or browse previous newsletters and www.KONGcompany.com for recipe recommendations.
KONG Stuff-A-Ball and Activity Ball –
The Stuff-A-Ball and Activity Ball (puppy version) like the classic KONG toy are made with flexible KONG natural rubber. Two opening and ridges in the octagonal shaped ball make it easy to vary the treat stuffing puzzles. The largest opening has four rubber treat deflector tabs to slow dispensing and provide challenge.
Toy introduction: Begin by filling the hollow section of the Stuff-A-Ball toy with treats easily dispensed. Try smaller kibble or treats that fall out easily past the treat deflector tabs. You can also break larger treats into smaller pieces. As your dog learns to roll the ball around she will be rewarded by random treat release. KONG Stuff’N Easy Treats or peanut butter applied near the large four-tabbed opening or between the outer ridges also works great and will ensure your dog is well occupied.
Maintaining enrichment: After a week or two of easily un-stuffed Stuff-A-Balls or Activity Balls, gradually increase the challenge by using larger treats or combination of treats that are increasingly difficult to dislodge. Inserting larger treats will require your dog to adopt new strategies to remove the delicious rewards inside. For the largest most challenging treats stuffed into the toy, your dog will learn to crush the entire ball breaking the treats inside into smaller pieces to gain reward.
KONG Goodie Bones –
The Goodie Bone, Extreme Goodie Bone and Puppy Goodie Bone are traditional rubber bone toys with two non-traditional goodie grippers on each end. Made with durable, KONG natural rubber, these toys are available in a variety of sizes.
Toy introduction: Begin by stuffing the two Goodie gripper sections with smaller treats. Be sure to leave some of the treat exposed, so your dog can easily grab it. You can also break larger treats into smaller pieces.
Maintaining enrichment: As your dog successfully learns to pull out smaller treats from the Goodie Grippers, start using progressively larger treats that are harder to pull out. To vary the challenge, try filling the Goodie Gripper sections with KONG Stuff’N Easy Treats (paste) or peanut butter. For the ultimate challenge, fill as above and freeze.
KONG STUFF'N RECIPES AND ACTIVITIES
KONG Toys are the original treat-dispensing toys; a properly stuffed KONG Toy will keep your dog busy and content for hours. Along with relieving boredom, a stuffed KONG Toy will provide an enriching activity that exercises both physically and mentally. Remember to reduce your dog’s bowl feeding when offering two or more stuffed KONGs daily. Clean KONGs thoroughly after each use. Top shelf of dishwasher is recommended.
Basic Stuff’N Suggestions
For quick and easy KONG stuffing use any of our KONG Stuff'N brand treats, pastes or ZIGGIES. KONG’s treats are specifically designed to fit KONG toys. Experiment with combinations of two or more KONG Snacks, Easy Treats or ZIGGIES for a longer lasting stuffed KONG session.
Winning KONG Stuff’N Recipe
Pumpkin Parfait ala KONG
I wanted to share Rose's favorite, long-lasting KONG stuffing treat. The only problem I run into with this recipe is…. if my dog Rosie sees me making them before sneaking them into the freezer, she will camp out in front of the fridge until she gets one.
The recipe below will fill four Large KONG toys. You will want to make more than one, my dog loves them. Best served outside.
4 Large Peanut Butter KONG Stuff'N Snack biscuits
1 Can Unsweetened Pumpkin
1 Pint Vanilla Yogurt
Insert Snack biscuit through large end of KONG toy, small biscuit end first. Situate Snack so it vertically divides the inside of the KONG toy. Fill one side with canned pumpkin and the other side with vanilla yogurt. Then pop in the freezer. This treat is healthy, long lasting and keeps Rose happy. I hope you and your dogs enjoy as well.
Best wishes,
Susan Davey

KONG CAT SECTION
KONG Cat Letters – New Section
This month the KONG Company would like to share two KONG Cat letters sent to us by grateful members of the KONG Cat community. It is great to be part of a community and product line that truly makes a positive difference in the lives of our feline companions.
Dear KONG
I recently purchased a KONG Kitty Zoom Groom because my new cat Queenie is shedding terribly with the New Mexico heat. She gets clumps in her mouth and fights to get rid of them, and has too many hairballs.
I wasn't sure if she would like it since she is 12 and kind of bony, but after using it a few times for short periods, last night she actually turned over for me to continue! The fur comes off the rubber brush so easily and in one piece. I have also used the flat side to remove hair from clothing.
Thanks for a nifty product at a good price!
Sierra James
Dear KONG Cat,
I purchased a KONG Kickeroo yesterday and brought it home to our two playful young cats -- they absolutely love it! They're excited by the catnip aroma, weird slinky tail, furry texture, and the size. It's aptly named a Kickeroo!
I'm going back for another, so they don't have to fight over it.
Best regards,
Catherine Burford
Sierra James and her cat Queenie along with Catherine and her two cats are this issue’s “KONG Cat Letter Contest” winners, both will receive a KONG Cat Gift Basket. Your letters, like the ones above are always welcome and appreciated. If you would like to share your KONG Cat experiences or any KONG news with the KONG community, just email us at: KONG@kongcompany.com. If your letter is chosen for the next KONG Community Newsletter, you will receive a KONG Gift Basket valued at $100.00.
CAT ACTIVITY
Why do cats love the Kickeroo?
We have received a lot of feedback from our cat owners who are pleasantly surprised that their cat enjoys playing with the KONG Kickeroo. Some are hesitant at first to purchase this oversized, catnip-filled wrestling toy, thinking that perhaps might be a tad big or “won’t play.” However, cats across the nation and world are voting with their paws for the KONG Kickeroo.
There’s a very good reason that cats are irresistibly drawn to the Kickeroo, as it is the correct size and shape to stimulate instinctual play. Naturally, cats look for large objects about the same size as them to attack and wrestle.
The Kickeroo’s size, shape, and material were specifically chosen to tap into this instinctual desire to play. We have received several stories of cats, even those who aren’t inclined to play, gleefully wrestling with their Kickeroo. If you have a story to share, feel free to send your note to us at KONG@kongcompany.com.
